Client: Sapient for (Confidential)

The client came to Sapient with an idea. They wanted help defining the idea and a set of presentation materials their CEO would use to pitch the idea to potential investors. The time frame and budget were very tight and that forced the team to quickly find ways of streamlining the usual design process.

The final deliverable was a Powerpoint presentation that used application stills to tell the story of a family whose father has congenital heart disease and how they could manage his condition with this tool. The material has been a success as the client has secured the necessary funding to begin development.

the process
With such a tight schedule, many important steps in the design process had to be streamlined. One of them was the production of wireframes. With no time to create polished, digital deliverables, I and the other information architect relied heavily on eraseable whiteboards and a digital camera.

Once the global elements were defined, we sketched them on colored card stock and taped them within a page outline. The unique content was then quickly drawn by hand and then photographed with the digital camera. Because of the expanse of whiteboards in the room, we were able to keep entire screen sequences up and iterate quickly before snapping a picture, wiping the boards, and moving on to the next sequence of screens.

As iterations needed to be made after the screen had been erased from the whiteboard, it was simple to layout the global elements of the page and redraw the unique contents. The visual designers on the team worked from these sketches to build the final images that were used in the CEO's presentation.

examples
The following are pairs of whiteboard sketches and the finished screen image that was derived from it. You may notice some slight differences in the placement of elements from the sketch to the final screen. Because we had daily interaction with a client representative who had decision making authority, changes could be discussed and implemented very quickly. Some modifications were only reflected in the final designs and not captured as wireframes.
